Will be unveiled in a ceremony at Wrigley Field Sep 7 - Statue of Whistler, Alabama, mother - Hall of Fame player defense and the best left-handed hitter in the history of the team.
"It's one of the greatest honor, do not expect that," Williams said Wednesday. "It's great for me and it's great for the whole family, children, grandchildren and great great grandchildren will go see it ... and will be there forever."
The decision to honor Williams (71 years) with a statue of one of the first steps that the new owner Tom Ricketts, lifelong Cubs fan who made the statement in the function of the team Tuesday night.
It did not specify where the statue will be placed. Could be a temporary location until it is completely renovated in an area outside the stadium.
Ernie Banks is the only other ballplayer to be so honored by the Cubs. There is also a statue of a broadcaster Harry Caray outside Wrigley.
Williams hit .290 with RBIs in 1475 during his career of 18 years. Wounded 392 of 426 homers in his capacity as a member of the Cubs 1959-1974.
Since ending his career in 1976 with the Oakland A, has served in the Cubs in a variety of capacities: hitting coach, bench coach, and the first base coach and special assistant to the president. The senior adviser since 2001.
Voice cracking GM Jim Hendry also talked about his respect and appreciation for Williams.
